Lesson 7: Upper Row Left Hand
Keys: Q W E R + Space
Reaching Up: Mastering the Upper Row (Q W E R)
Welcome to Lesson 7 at TypingScore.org. You have mastered the Home Row. Now, it is time to stretch your fingers upwards. In this lesson, we will focus on the Left Hand keys of the Upper Row: Q, W, E, and R.
How to Type the Upper Row?
The secret to typing the upper row is to **stretch** your fingers from the Home Row without moving your whole hand. Your palm should stay stationary.
- Left Pinky: Moves from A to Q.
- Left Ring Finger: Moves from S to W.
- Left Middle Finger: Moves from D to E.
- Left Index Finger: Moves from F to R.
After pressing any of these keys, your finger should immediately snap back to its Home Row position (A, S, D, F). This is called the "Home Row Return" technique.
Common Challenges
Many beginners find the **Q** and **W** keys difficult because the pinky and ring fingers are naturally weaker. Do not worry if you feel slow at first. This lesson is designed to strengthen those specific fingers.
Why Practice Q W E R?
These keys are part of the standard QWERTY layout. The letter **E** is the most common letter in the English language. Mastering it early will significantly boost your typing speed. The letters **R** and **W** are also very frequent.
Practice this lesson for at least 15 minutes daily. Focus on returning your fingers to the home row after every keystroke!
