The Programmer's Nightmare: Curly Braces

Welcome to Lesson 24 at TypingScore.org. If you intend to write C, Java, JavaScript, or CSS, you will type thousands of these.

The Keys

  • Open Brace {: Hold Left Shift with Left Pinky, reach for the square bracket [ with Right Pinky.
  • Close Brace }: Hold Left Shift with Left Pinky, reach for the square bracket ] with Right Pinky.

Why is this the hardest reach?

This is a Double Pinky Extension. Your left pinky is anchored on Shift, while your right pinky stretches to the absolute edge of the keyboard. This creates maximum tension across the hands.

Ergonomic Tip

Do not try to keep your right hand on the home row (JKL;) while reaching for the closing brace }. It is physically impossible for most hands. Move your entire right hand to the right, hit the key, and then slide back to the home row. Floating your hand prevents wrist strain.

Practice this movement: Shift -> Slide Right -> Hit Key -> Slide Back.
