Lesson 23: Brackets & Parentheses
Keys: [ ] ( )
Code Fundamentals: Brackets & Parentheses
Welcome to Lesson 23 at TypingScore.org. If you write code, these symbols are as important as letters. This lesson drills the four bracket types used in nearly every programming language.
The Keys
- Square Bracket Open [: Right Pinky reaches right from the semicolon key (next to
P). - Square Bracket Close ]: Right Pinky reaches further right (next to
[). - Parenthesis Open (: Hold Left Shift, then press
9with Left Middle Finger. - Parenthesis Close ): Hold Right Shift, then press
0with Right Pinky.
Why This Matters
In programming, brackets define structure:
[]- Arrays, lists, indexing (Python, JavaScript)()- Function calls, expressions, tuples{}- Objects, dictionaries, code blocks (next lesson!)
Avoiding "Bracket Blindness"
Beginners often type [ when they mean (, or forget to close brackets. This lesson trains your brain to distinguish them instantly. Notice the physical distance: square brackets are on the far right; parentheses require Shift + number row.
Pro Tip: Most code editors auto-close brackets. But during exams or whiteboard coding, you are on your own. Master these now!
