Lesson 22: Shifted Symbols
Keys: : " ?
The Shifted Trio: Colon, Quote, Question
Welcome to Lesson 22 at TypingScore.org. In the previous lesson, you learned the base punctuation marks. Now, we add the **Shift Key** to unlock their upper functions.
The Keys
- Colon (:): Hold Left Shift with your left pinky, and press the Semicolon (;) key with your right pinky.
- Double Quote ("): Hold Left Shift with your left pinky, and press the Apostrophe (') key with your right pinky.
- Question Mark (?): Hold Left Shift with your left pinky, and press the Slash (/) key with your right pinky.
Coordination Challenge
This lesson is physically demanding for the pinky fingers. Your left pinky must hold Shift down firmly while your right pinky strikes accurately. This is called "contrary motion."
Common Usage
The Question Mark is essential for dialogue and inquiries. The Double Quote is vital for speech ("Hello") and coding strings. The Colon introduces lists or explanations.
Tip: Do not release the Shift key until the punctuation key has been fully pressed. If you release too early, you will get the unshifted symbol (e.g., ; instead of :).
