Punctuation Essentials: The Right Pinky Workload
Welcome to Lesson 21 at TypingScore.org. Now that we have covered the alphabet and numbers, we turn to the essential symbols that give structure to our sentences.
The Right Pinky's Responsibility
The Right Pinky finger is the hardest working finger on the keyboard for programmers and writers. In this lesson, we drill three keys:
- Hyphen (-): Located in the number row, to the right of the "0" key. Reach up and far right.
- Semicolon (;): Located on the Home Row, directly under your right pinky. This is your anchor.
- Apostrophe ('): Located on the Home Row, immediately to the right of the semicolon. Just a small stretch right.
Usage Context
- Hyphen: Used for compound words (e.g., "fast-paced", "self-driving").
- Semicolon: Used in programming (end of statement) and complex sentences.
- Apostrophe: Used for contractions (e.g., "don't", "it's") and possessives.
Technique Tip
Because the apostrophe and semicolon are adjacent, it is easy to mistype them. Keep your hand steady. When reaching for the Hyphen (-), be careful not to overshoot and hit the Backspace key. Return to the semicolon (Home position) immediately.
