Symbolic Power: ! @ # $ %

Welcome to Lesson 25 at TypingScore.org. Now that you are comfortable with the number row, it is time to access the "Shift Layer" symbols hiding beneath numbers 1 through 5.

The "Cross-Hand" Shift Rule

Because these symbols are typed with the Left Hand, you must hold the Right Shift key with your Right Pinky.

  • ! (Exclamation): Right Shift + 1 (Left Pinky). Used for logic and emphasis.
  • @ (At Sign): Right Shift + 2 (Left Ring). Critical for emails.
  • # (Hash/Pound): Right Shift + 3 (Left Middle). Used for hashtags and comments in Python.
  • $ (Dollar): Right Shift + 4 (Left Index). Used for currency and variables (PHP, JS).
  • % (Percent): Right Shift + 5 (Left Index - Stretch). Used for math and modulo operations.

Common Mistakes

Beginners often try to hold the Left Shift key with their left pinky while trying to type the number 2 with their left ring finger. This contorts the hand painfully. Always use the opposite Shift key. It feels slower at first, but it is the only way to type symbols quickly and safely.
