Lesson 18: Number Row - Ring Fingers
The Difficult Reach: 2 & 9
The Weak Link: Ring Fingers (2 & 9)
Welcome to Lesson 18 at TypingScore.org. We are moving further outward on the number row to the keys 2 and 9.
Why is this Lesson Hard?
Anatomically, the Ring Finger is the least independent finger. It shares tendons with the Middle Finger. When you try to lift your ring finger to reach 2 or 9, your middle finger often wants to come along for the ride. This makes these keys the most frustrating for beginners.
The Movement
- Number 2: Left Ring Finger reaches up from S. It passes over **W**.
- Number 9: Right Ring Finger reaches up from L. It passes over **O**.
Overcoming Tension
Because the ring finger is "weak," you might tense up your hand or wrist to force the movement. **Relax.** It is better to move your whole hand slightly up than to strain your tendons. Practice tapping S-2-S and L-9-L slowly to build the specific muscle memory required for this isolation.
Real World Usage
The key 2 is essential for the @ symbol (Shift+2), and 9 is essential for the opening parenthesis (Shift+9). Mastering the reach to the numbers now will make typing email addresses and code much easier later.
