Lesson 17: Number Row - Middle Fingers
Precision Reach: 3 & 8
Reaching for the Sky: Middle Fingers (3 & 8)
Welcome to Lesson 17 at TypingScore.org. After mastering the central index numbers, we move outward to the Middle Fingers. In this lesson, we focus on the numbers 3 and 8.
The Vertical Reach
The Middle Fingers are your longest fingers, which makes the reach to the number row slightly easier than the Index fingers, but it requires precision to avoid hitting neighboring keys.
- Number 3: Left Middle Finger reaches up from D. It passes over **E**.
- Number 8: Right Middle Finger reaches up from K. It passes over **I**.
The Anchor Technique
When you reach for 3 or 8, your other fingers might want to lift off the keyboard. This is called "floating." While a little floating is okay for the number row, try to keep at least your Pinky Fingers anchored on the A and ; keys. This acts as a pivot point so you can find your way back home.
Common Patterns
The number 3 is used frequently in dates (March, 3rd) and pricing. The number 8 is often used in times (8:00) and years (1988, 2008). Getting these fingers comfortable with the vertical stretch is crucial for fluid data entry.
