Lesson 16: Number Row - Index Fingers
Reaching High: 4 5 6 7
The Numeric Frontier: Index Fingers (4, 5, 6, 7)
Welcome to Lesson 16 at TypingScore.org. You have mastered the alphabet. Now, we begin the final frontier of the standard layout: The Number Row. We start with the strongest fingers: the Index Fingers.
The "Long Reach" Technique
Reaching the number row requires a significant stretch. Do not move your whole hand up; keep your palms floating in place and extend only the finger.
- Number 4: Left Index reaches up and slightly left (above R).
- Number 5: Left Index reaches up and slightly right (above T).
- Number 6: Right Index reaches up and slightly left (above Y).
- Number 7: Right Index reaches up and slightly right (above U).
Why start here?
Numbers 4, 5, 6, and 7 are in the "center" of the number row. They are the easiest to locate relative to the tactile bumps on F and J. Mastering these first anchors your hand position for the harder numbers (like 1 and 0).
Look at the Screen, Not Your Hands!
The number row is far away, and the temptation to peek is strong. Fight it! If you make a mistake, feel for the bump on F or J to re-center yourself, then reach again.
