Typing Capital Letters: The Shift Key Rules
Welcome to Lesson 15 at TypingScore.org. Now that you know the positions of all the letters, it is time to learn how to type Capital Letters using the Shift keys.
The "Opposite Hands" Rule
Touch typing relies on efficiency. You have two Shift keys for a reason. To type efficiently, you must use the Shift key on the opposite hand of the letter you are typing.
- Typing 'A' (Left Hand)? Hold Right Shift with your Right Pinky.
- Typing 'L' (Right Hand)? Hold Left Shift with your Left Pinky.
Why not just use one Shift key?
If you use the left hand to hold Shift and type a letter like 'Z', your hand contorts into a painful shape. This slows you down and can lead to repetitive strain injury (RSI). The opposite-hand method keeps your hands balanced and in the home row position.
Practice Drill
This lesson mixes lowercase and uppercase letters (e.g., "Abc Def Ghi"). Watch the keyboard on the screen—it will light up the Left or Right Shift key when you press them. Focus on using your pinkies accurately!
