Lesson 19: Number Row - Pinky Fingers
The Extreme Reach: 1 & 0
The Extreme Reach: Pinky Fingers (1 & 0)
Welcome to Lesson 19 at TypingScore.org. We have reached the final and most difficult keys of the number row: 1 and 0.
The Challenge of 1 and 0
These keys are the furthest away from the home row. They require your pinky fingers—your weakest fingers—to stretch the furthest distance.
- Number 1: Left Pinky reaches up and far left from A. It passes over **Q**.
- Number 0: Right Pinky reaches up and far right from ; (semicolon). It passes over **P**.
Moving the Hand
Unlike the index fingers, where you can keep your palm still, you may need to shift your hand slightly to reach 1 and 0 comfortably. This is acceptable. The goal is to return your hand to the home row immediately after the keystroke.
Why is this important?
The "1" key is obviously critical for data. The "0" is vital for math, coding, and years (2020, 2030). Additionally, these keys house the Exclamation Point (!) and the Closing Parenthesis ), which are essential for punctuation.
Tip: Do not look down! Trust your muscle memory. If you miss, delete and try again by feeling for the home row bumps.
