The Index Finger Stretch: Keys B & N

Welcome to Lesson 13 at TypingScore.org. You have mastered the outer keys of the bottom row. Now, we focus on the two center keys of the bottom row: B and N.

How to Reach B and N

These keys require a specific movement called the Index Reach. Unlike other keys that are directly below your fingers, these require a lateral stretch.

  • Letter B: Use your Left Index Finger. Start at F, stretch down and to the right to hit B, then immediately snap back to F.
  • Letter N: Use your Right Index Finger. Start at J, stretch down and to the left to hit N, then immediately snap back to J.

Why Are These Keys Difficult?

Many beginners confuse B and N or use the wrong hand (e.g., using the right hand for B). This is a bad habit that will slow you down later. By strictly using the Left Index for B and Right Index for N, you maintain the symmetry of the keyboard.

Practice Strategy

This lesson is designed to force your brain to distinguish between the left-reach (N) and right-reach (B). Focus on the "elastic" feeling of your index finger stretching out and snapping back to the Home Row.

Do not look at the keyboard! Trust your fingers to find the distance.
