How to Master the Home Row Keys (Both Hands)

Welcome to Lesson 5 at TypingScore.org. In the previous lessons, you practiced the left and right hands separately. Now, it is time to bring them together. This lesson is designed to help you synchronize both hands on the Home Row keys (A, S, D, F, J, K, L, ;).

What is the Home Row?

The "Home Row" is the central row of keys on your keyboard where your fingers should always rest. It is the starting point for touch typing. Efficient typists always return their fingers to the home row after pressing any other key.

Correct Finger Placement

To type fast and accurately, you must place your fingers on the correct keys:

  • Left Hand: Pinky on A, Ring on S, Middle on D, Index on F.
  • Right Hand: Index on J, Middle on K, Ring on L, Pinky on ; (Semi-colon).
  • Thumbs: Both thumbs should hover over the Spacebar. Use whichever thumb feels comfortable to press space.

Tips for Students & Beginners

Learning to type takes patience. Here are three golden rules to improve your speed on TypingScore.org:

  • Do Not Look Down: Keep your eyes on the screen. The virtual keyboard in this tool will help you find the keys without looking at your hands.
  • Focus on Accuracy, Not Speed: Speed comes automatically with practice. If you type correctly, you will eventually type faster.
  • Use All Fingers: Do not use just two fingers (hunt and peck). Using all ten fingers distributes the work and reduces fatigue.

Why is this Lesson Important?

Mixing both hands is where the real "touch typing" begins. Your brain has to coordinate left and right signals simultaneously. This builds muscle memory. Once you master Lesson 5, you have built the strongest foundation for typing fast.

Keep practicing this lesson until you can type without mistakes for at least 2 minutes!
